254 – Muhammad ibn al-Husayn said: Ismaʿil ibn Ziyad narrated to me, saying: ⦗155⦘ Bashshar ibn Bishr ibn Surayd came to us. He was one of the devoted worshippers and would not eat except once every seven days. I visited him one evening to greet him, whereupon he brought out four dates and said, “Eat them all; if we had anything more than these, we would have preferred you over ourselves.”
