248 – Muhammad said: Al-Salt ibn Hakim related to me, saying, “I heard Abu Jaʿfar al-Mukhawwalī state: ‘When the servant goes hungry, his body is refined, his heart softens, his tears fall in torrents, his faculties and limbs hasten to obedience, and he lives honorably in this world.’ He then declared, ‘Shame on the one who puts his stomach before his religion—shame, and yet more shame!’”
