233 – ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn Qarīb narrated to us. He said: My uncle related to me, saying: al-ʿAlāʾ ibn Aslam narrated to us:
“ʿAbd al-Karīm al-Māzinī was appointed governor of Bahrain. He took up residence at al-Shabakah and arranged for a meal spread to be kept ready for him there. In al-Shabakah lived an elderly man who had withdrawn from society. The man rose and gave the call to prayer, then he prayed. After that a woman brought him a dish containing a few dates, which he ate. He then went to the well, hauled up a bucket, and drank. ʿAbd al-Karīm sent word to him, ‘Come and share our table.’ He replied, ‘I have already taken what will suffice me until the next such occasion.’”
