Al-Ju'Ibn Abi al-Dunya

232 – Yūsuf ibn Mūsā narrated to us; he said: ʿUbayd Allāh ibn Mūsā narrated to us; he said: Qatari al-Khashshāb informed us, from Mudrik Abū Ziyād, who said:

We were in an orchard that belonged to Ibn ʿAbbās when al-Ḥasan and al-Ḥusayn arrived and walked around the garden. Al-Ḥasan then said, “Mudrik, do you have anything for lunch?” I replied, “Only the children’s fare.” ⦗144⦘ So I brought him vinegar and bread, a few bundles of fresh greens, and some coarse salt. He ate from that, and then his own meal was brought in—his regular food was both plentiful and delicious. He said to me, “Mudrik, gather the boys of the garden.” They ate, while he himself did not join them. I asked him about it, and he replied, “That earlier meal was more pleasing to me than this one.”
