213 – Muḥammad ibn al-Ḥusayn said: al-Ṣalt ibn Ḥakīm narrated to me, saying: Abū ʿĀṣim al-ʿAbbādānī narrated to me, saying: ʿAbd al-Wāḥid ibn Zayd once said to me:
“Allah has no need for His servants to torture themselves with hunger and thirst; rather, the believer is the one who needs that discipline. He wants his Master to see him parched and worn out, having starved himself for His sake, forsaken sleep, and fatigued his body. Perhaps then Allah will look upon him with mercy and, on account of that hunger and thirst, grant him a magnificent reward.”
He then added, “And do you know what that magnificent reward is? It is the freeing of necks from the Fire.”
