Al-Ju'Ibn Abi al-Dunya

27 – [ʿAbd …] ibn Munkadir narrated to us; he said: al-Mughīrah ibn ʿAbd Allāh narrated to us, from ʿĀṣim ibn Muḥammad al-ʿUmarī, from his father, who said:

ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb used to apply tar to the hooves of the camels set aside for zakāt. One day he came in, parched by the hot east wind, and asked, “Do you have anything to eat?” His wife replied, “Under the bed.” He reached for a bowl containing some dates and ate from them, then drank some water. Wiping his stomach, he said, “Woe to the person whose belly lands him in the Fire.”
