Al-Ju'Ibn Abi al-Dunya

191 – Dawud ibn ʿAmr al-Dabbi narrated to us; he said: Ismaʿil ibn ʿAyyash narrated from ʿAbd Allah ibn Dinar, who said: Jesus (peace be upon him) said to the disciples:

“Hold fast to barley bread; eat it with coarse salt, and eat only when you truly feel the appetite for it. Wear garments of coarse hair, and leave this world unblemished. Truly, I say to you: the sweetness of this world is the bitterness of the Hereafter, and the bitterness of this world is the sweetness of the Hereafter. The servants of Allah are not those who live in luxury.

“In truth, I say to you: the worst among you in deeds is a scholar who loves the world and therefore prefers it to the knowledge he has. If he could, he would make all people like himself in his conduct. How eager the slaves of the world are to find an excuse—yet how far they are from any excuse, if only they knew.”
