185 – Ishaq ibn Ismaʿil related to us; Yazid ibn Harun related to us; Ismaʿil ibn Abi Khalid informed us, from Musʿab ibn Saʿd, who said:
Hafsa bint ʿUmar once said to ʿUmar, “Commander of the Believers, if only you would wear clothes softer than the ones you have and eat food finer than what you usually eat. Allah has opened the lands for you and increased the good that comes to you.”
He replied, “I am going to dispute this with you before your very self. Do you not recall the hardship the Messenger of Allah ﷺ endured in his manner of living?” He kept reminding her of this until she wept.
Then he added, “I have already told you—and by Allah, if I am able, I will surely share with those two in the severity of the life they led, so that, perhaps, I may share with them in the life of ease they now enjoy.”
