Al-Ju'Ibn Abi al-Dunya

179 – Muḥammad ibn ʿAbbād ibn Mūsā narrated to us; he said: Muḥammad ibn ʿUmar narrated to us, from Ibn Abī Dhiʿb, from Muslim ibn Jundub, from Nawfal ibn Iyās ⦗118⦘, who said:

We were once sitting with ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn ʿAwf—and he was indeed a splendid companion—when he took us home with him one day. A dish of wheat was brought to us with bread and meat placed on top. As soon as it was set down, ʿAbd al-Raḥmān began to weep.

We asked, “What makes you weep, Abū Muḥammad?”

He replied, “I weep because the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) passed away without ever having his fill of barley bread.”
