178 – Abu ‘Ali al-Marwazi narrated to us; he said: ‘Abd Allah ibn ‘Uthman informed us; he said: ‘Abd Allah ibn al-Mubarak informed us; he said: Shu‘bah informed us, from Sa‘d ibn Ibrahim, from his father, that when ‘Abd al-Rahman ibn ‘Awf was brought some food—while he was fasting—he said:

“Mus‘ab ibn ‘Umayr was killed, and he was better than I; he was wrapped in his cloak—if his head was covered, his feet showed, and if his feet were covered, his head showed.”

(The narrator added:) “And Hamzah was killed, and he was better than I. Then the riches of this world were spread out before us,” or he said, “We were given of this world what we were given, and I fear that our good deeds have been hastened for us.”

He then began to weep until he left the food untouched.
