162. ʿAlī ibn al-Jaʿd al-Jawharī narrated to us; he said, “al-Mubārak ibn Faḍālah related to me from al-Ḥasan, who said:

ʿUtbah ibn Ghazwān once addressed the people of Basra and, in the course of his sermon, declared:

‘I remember being the seventh of only seven who remained with the Messenger of Allah—peace and blessings be upon him—just before the month of Ramadan. We had nothing to eat save the leaves we could pick from the trees, until the corners of our mouths became blistered from chewing them. I also remember finding a cloak; I tore it in half so that Saʿd ibn Mālik and I could each take a part.’
