138 – Ibrāhīm ibn ʿAbd Allāh al-Hawwārī narrated to me; he said: “Hushaym informed us,” he said: “Mughīra informed us, from Qaṭan ibn ʿAbd Allāh, who said: ⦗95⦘
“I saw Ibn al-Zubayr practicing wiṣāl (continuous fasting) from one Friday to the next. When the time came for him to break his fast on the night that ushered in the following Friday, he would have brought to him a goblet he called al-ʿUmariyy, together with a qaʿb (wooden bowl) of clarified butter. He would then have milk drawn and poured over it, call for a little ṣabr (aloe) to be sprinkled on top, and drink it.”
He added, “The milk sustained him, the clarified butter quenched his thirst, and the ṣabr opened his bowels.”
