137 – Muhammad related to me; he said: Muʿādh ibn al-Faḍl told us; he said: ʿAdiyy ibn Saʿīd narrated … He said: “Ibrāhīm al-Muhallimī spent six days without tasting anything. When his hunger became severe—he was with us then on the seashore—he began, by Allah, to roam along the coast at night, reciting:
‘At times you preoccupy the heart’s concern with morsels …
yet leaving the soul to hunger is the finest quest.’
He went on pacing and repeating those lines until daybreak, still without having eaten. Thus he completed seven full days, taking no food at night or during the day.”
