136 – Muhammad narrated to me: al-Salt ibn Hakim narrated to us, saying, “I heard ʿAbd Allah ibn Marzuq say, ‘Nothing curbs arrogance like hunger.’”
Abu ʿAbd al-Rahman al-ʿUmari, the ascetic, asked, “And how is it maintained, in your view?” ⦗94⦘ He replied, “It is maintained by never allowing yourself to be completely satisfied.”
Abu ʿAbd al-Rahman said, “How can someone living in this world manage that?”
ʿAbd Allah answered, “That is the easiest thing, Abu ʿAbd al-Rahman, for those under His care. Whoever is granted success in obeying Him simply stops eating before he is full—this is what it means to keep hunger constant.”
