“Embrace hunger, for hunger is among the gains of the God-fearing;
And whoever endures prolonged hunger for a day will in time be filled.”
He said, “By Allah, I awoke and understood what he meant, so I exclaimed, ‘May my father be your ransom! Do you not see that your master never eats during the daytime at all?’ He replied, ‘That is precisely what I wanted from you. What concern have the seekers with busying themselves over food by day? No, by Allah—nothing befits them but Sufism and a bare sufficiency until the command of Allah arrives, when bellies will cling to backs out of longing for Allah and for meeting Him.’”
