17 – Ishaq ibn Isma‘il narrated to us; he said: Isma‘il ibn Ibrahim narrated to us, ⦗38⦘ he said: Ayyub narrated to us, from Mujahid, from ‘Ali, who said: “I once felt intense hunger in Madinah, so I went out to the uplands of the city looking for work. I came upon a woman who had piled up lumps of clay, and I assumed she wanted them moistened. I therefore struck a bargain with her: for every bucket of water I drew she would give me one date. I drew sixteen bucketfuls, until my hands were blistered. Then I went to the water and drank from it, after which I returned, cupped my two hands in front of her like this, and she counted out sixteen dates for me. I brought them to the Prophet ﷺ, informed him of what had happened, and he ate from them with me.”
