110 – ʿAlī ibn al-Jaʿd narrated to us, saying: Maḥbūb the Ascetic narrated to us. He said: al-Ḥasan reported that ʿĀmir ibn ʿAbd Qays said: ⦗83⦘
“I have found that people’s living is bound up with four things: clothing, women, sleep, and food.
As for clothing, I do not mind with what I cover my nakedness and fling over my shoulders—whether it is wool or something else.
As for women, I care no more about seeing a woman than I do about seeing a wall.
Sleep and food, however, have gotten the better of me, though I still take something of them. By Allah, if I remain alive I shall wage war on them with all my strength!”
Al-Ḥasan said, “And, by Allah, he did wage war on them with all his strength until he died.”
