81 – Khalid ibn Mirdas narrated to us; he said: al-Muʿalla al-Juʿfi narrated to us, from Ibn Abi Najih, from Mujahid, who said: ʿUmar proclaimed, “O people, beware of overfilling your bellies with food, for it makes one lazy about the prayer, spoils the body, breeds illness, and Allah, exalted is He, detests the corpulent scholar. Instead, practice moderation in your nourishment, for that is closer to soundness, further from extravagance, and more conducive to worshipping Allah. A servant is not destroyed until he chooses his desire over his religion.”
