78 – Surayj ibn Yūnus narrated to me; he said: Hushaym narrated to us, from Ismāʿīl ibn Abī Khālid, from Qays, from ʿUtbah ibn Farqad al-Sulamī, who said: ⦗71⦘
“I came to ʿUmar, and he used to slaughter a whole camel every day, sending its choicest cuts to the Muslims and to the Mothers of the Believers, while ordering that the neck and the gristle be kept for himself and his family. He then called for food, and it was brought: coarse bread and scraps of tough meat. He kept telling me, ‘Eat!’ So I took a piece, chewed it, but I could not swallow it. I looked again and noticed a white morsel; I thought it was hump-fat, so I picked it up, only to find it was neck gristle. I looked toward ʿUmar, whereupon he said, ‘That Iraqi fare you and your companions are used to will never reach you here.’”
