a person unlawfully, when he said:
“Did we not raise you among us as a child, and did you not remain among us for years of your life? Yet you committed that deed of yours, and you were one of the ungrateful.” He said, “I did it then, when I was in error. So I fled from you when I feared you. Then my Lord granted me sound judgment and made me one of the messengers.”
[Surah al-Shu'arā: 18–21]
Moses—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—had repented of that, as Allah Most High informed us, and He forgave him, as He said:
“So Moses struck him with his fist and killed him. He said, ‘This is Satan’s work; he is truly a clear, misleading enemy.’ He said, ‘My Lord, I have wronged myself, so forgive me.’ And He forgave him. He alone is the All-Forgiving, Most Merciful.”
[Surah al-Qasas: 15–16]
If it is asked: If He had forgiven him, why then do they decline to intercede on the Day of Resurrection because of what had occurred on their part (1)? When Adam is asked to intercede, he says, “I was forbidden to eat from the tree, yet I ate from it. Myself, myself! Go to someone else; go to Noah.” They then come to Noah (2), and he says, “I made a supplication against the people of the earth that I had not been commanded to make.” The Friend of Allah mentions his three allusive statements, which he called lies although they were forms of indirect speech, and Moses mentions his killing of a person (3).
(1) The original reads *li-ajli limā badā minhum*, with a redundant preposition; the correct reading is the one I have adopted.
(2) In the original, after the word “Noah,” there is a mark referring to the margin, where two words appear. In the facsimile, only “Noah” is legible. I have adopted the wording found in the hadith of intercession: “They come to Noah.”
(3) Ibn Taymiyya cited the hadith in paraphrase. It forms part of the hadith of intercession mentioned previously (p. 401, n. 9). The version closest to the one cited here is that narrated from Abū Hurayra—may Allah be pleased with him—by al-Bukhārī, 6/84–85 (Book of Quranic Exegesis, Surah Banī Isrā’īl, chapter “The Descendants of Those We Carried with Noah”), and Muslim, 1/180–187 (Book of Faith, chapter “The Lowest-Ranking Inhabitant of Paradise”). Al-Bukhārī’s version (6/84) states:
“Adam will say, ‘My Lord has become angry today with an anger the like of which He had never shown before and will never show again. He forbade me from the tree, but I disobeyed Him. Myself! Myself! Myself! Go to someone else; go to Noah.’ They will then come to Noah and say, ‘O Noah, you were the first messenger sent to the inhabitants of the earth, and Allah called you a grateful servant. Intercede for us with your Lord. Do you not see the state we are in?’ He will say, ‘My Lord, Mighty and Majestic, has become angry today with an anger the like of which He had never shown before and will never show again. I had a supplication, and I made it against my people. Myself! Myself! Myself! Go to Abraham.’
“They will then come to Abraham and say, ‘O Abraham, you are Allah’s prophet and His intimate friend among the inhabitants of the earth. Intercede for us with your Lord. Do you not see the state we are in?’ He will say to them, ‘My Lord has become angry today with an anger the like of which He had never shown before and will never show again. I told three lies’—Abū Hayyān mentioned them in the hadith—‘Myself! Myself! Myself! Go to someone else; go to Moses.’
“They will then come to Moses and say, ‘O Moses, you are Allah’s messenger. Allah favored you above mankind with His message and by speaking to you. Intercede for us with your Lord. Do you not see the state we are in?’ He will say, ‘My Lord has become angry today with an anger the like of which He had never shown before and will never show again. I killed a person whom I had not been commanded to kill. Myself! Myself! Myself! Go to someone else; go to Jesus.’
“They will then come to Jesus and say, ‘O Jesus, you are Allah’s messenger and His Word, which He cast to Mary, and a spirit from Him. You spoke to people while still an infant in the cradle. Intercede for us. Do you not see the state we are in?’ Jesus will say, ‘My Lord has become angry today with an anger the like of which He had never shown before and will never show again’—and he will mention no sin—‘Myself! Myself! Myself! Go to someone else; go to Muhammad—may Allah bless him and grant him peace.’
“They will then come to Muhammad—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—and say, ‘O Muhammad, you are Allah’s messenger and the Seal of the Prophets. Allah has forgiven your former and latter sins. Intercede for us with your Lord. Do you not see the state we are in?’ I will depart and come beneath the Throne, where I will fall prostrate before my Lord, Mighty and Majestic. Allah will then inspire me with praises of Him and beautiful words of praise that He had never disclosed to anyone before me. It will then be said, ‘O Muhammad, raise your head. Ask, and you will be given; intercede, and your intercession will be accepted.’ I will raise my head and say, ‘My community, my Lord! My community, my Lord!’” To the end of the hadith.
