Minhaj as-SunnahIbn Taimiya

this humility—one of the means by which Allah raised him still higher.

Likewise, when one of his Companions prostrated himself before him, he forbade him from doing so and said:

“Prostration is fitting for Allah alone.” (1)

Likewise, when some people used to say, “What Allah wills and Muhammad wills,” he said:

“Have you made me a rival to Allah?! Say: ‘What Allah wills, then what Muhammad wills.’” (2)

And he said in his supplication:

“I am wretched and poor, imploring aid and seeking refuge, fearful and apprehensive, acknowledging and confessing my sin. I ask You as one in need asks; I beseech You as a lowly sinner beseeches; and I call upon You with the fearful supplication of one whose neck has bowed before You, whose body has been humbled, and whose nose has been abased before You.” (3)

And other such—

(1) I did not find the hadith in this form. *Al-Musnad* (al-Halabī ed.), 5/227–228, 6, contains two hadiths: the first is narrated from Mu‘ādh and the second from ‘Ā’ishah—may Allah be pleased with them both. Their substance is that some of the Messenger of Allah’s Companions—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—asked him to permit them to prostrate before him, but he forbade them from doing so. A third hadith conveying the same meaning is narrated from Jābir ibn ‘Abd Allāh—may Allah be pleased with him—in *Sunan al-Dārimī*, 1/10–11 (Introduction, chapter on the honor Allah bestowed upon His Prophet through trees, animals, and jinn believing in him). (2) I did not find the hadith in this wording, but I found a similar hadith in *al-Musnad* (al-Ma‘ārif ed.), 2/253. Its wording is: “Ibn ‘Abbās reported that a man said to the Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—‘What Allah wills and what you will.’ The Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—replied: ‘Have you made me an equal to Allah? Rather, what Allah alone wills.’” A hadith with similar wording is also narrated from Ibn ‘Abbās—may Allah be pleased with them both—in *al-Musnad* (al-Ma‘ārif ed.), 4/193 and 5/85; an abridged version appears at 3/296. Ibn Hajar cited this hadith in *Fath al-Bārī* (al-Salafiyyah ed.), 11/540, stating that it is found in Ahmad’s *Musnad* and *Sunan al-Nasā’ī*. See also: *Sunan Ibn Mājah*, 1/684–685; *al-Musnad* (al-Halabī ed.). (3) I was unable to locate this hadith.
