It is also narrated in the two Sahih collections that he used to say:
“O Allah, forgive me my sin, my ignorance, my excesses in my affairs, and whatever You know better about me than I do. [O Allah, forgive me for what I have done in jest and in earnest, by mistake and deliberately—all of that is in me. O Allah, forgive me my former and latter sins, what I have concealed and what I have disclosed, and whatever You know better about me than I do] (1). You are the One who advances and the One who delays, and You have power over all things.” (2)
(3) [This was likewise the case when the Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—said:
“Do not make my grave a place of festivity. Invoke blessings upon me wherever you may be, for your blessings reach me.”
This was narrated by Abu Dāwūd and others (4); and he said:
“O Allah, do not let my grave become an idol that is worshipped.”
This was narrated by Mālik and others (5)—it was—
(1) The text in square brackets is absent from N and M.
(2) N and M: “You are the One who delays; there is no deity but You.” The hadith is narrated from Abū Mūsā al-Ash‘arī—may Allah be pleased with him—in: *al-Bukhārī*, 8/84–85 (Book of Supplications, chapter on the Prophet’s words—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—“O Allah, forgive me what I have done before and what I have done afterward”); *Muslim*, 4/2087 (Book of Remembrance and Supplication, chapter on seeking refuge from the evil of one’s deeds); and *al-Musnad* (al-Halabī ed.), 4/417.
(3) The passage following the opening bracket appears only in ‘Ayn and concludes two pages later.
(4) The hadith is in *Sunan Abī Dāwūd*, 2/293 (Book of Rites, chapter on visiting graves). Its wording is: “Abū Hurayrah reported that the Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—said: ‘Do not turn your houses into graves, and do not make my grave a place of festivity. Invoke blessings upon me, for your invocations of blessings reach me wherever you may be.’” Ahmad also narrated the hadith with similar wording in *al-Musnad* (al-Ma‘ārif ed.), vol. 17 (no. 8790).
(5) Ibn Taymiyyah previously cited this hadith at 1/475, where I noted (t [0–9]) that it appears in *al-Muwatta’* (Fu’ād ‘Abd al-Bāqī ed.), 1/172. Its wording there is: “Zayd ibn Aslam reported from ‘Atā’ ibn Yasār that the Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—said: ‘O Allah, do not make my grave an idol that is worshipped. Allah’s wrath became intense against a people who made the graves of their prophets into places of worship.’” The editor quoted Ibn ‘Abd al-Barr as saying: “There is no disagreement regarding Mālik’s transmission of this hadith as *mursal*.” Ahmad also narrated the hadith in his *Musnad* (al-Ma‘ārif ed.), 13/86–88 (no. 7352), with the following wording: “Sufyān narrated to us, from Hamzah ibn al-Mughīrah, from Suhayl ibn Abī Sālih, from his father, from Abū Hurayrah, from the Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace: ‘O Allah, do not make my grave an idol that is worshipped. May Allah curse a people who made the graves of their prophets into places of worship.’” Shaykh Ahmad Shākir—may Allah have mercy on him—said: “Its chain of transmission is authentic.” He then discussed its narrators in detail and identified other locations and chains through which this hadith was transmitted.
