that [nothing] proceeds from him (1) which he would later retract. For when such conduct becomes known of a man, people accuse him (2) of lying, unbelief, and ignorance. It is authentically established that the Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—said:
“None of you will enter Paradise by virtue of his deeds.”
They asked, “Not even you, [O Messenger of Allah] (3)?”
He replied, “Not even me, unless Allah envelops me in mercy and grace from Him.” (4)
This was among his greatest merits (5).
Likewise, he [may Allah bless him and grant him peace] (6) said:
“Do not praise me extravagantly as the Christians praised Jesus, son of Mary (7), for I am only a servant. Rather, say: ‘Allah’s servant and messenger.’” (8)
Anyone who heard this esteemed him for such words.
