It is authentically established in Sahīh Muslim (1), on the authority of Abū Dharr [may Allah be pleased with him] (2), who said: [The Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—said:
“I certainly know the last person to enter Paradise and the last person to emerge from the Fire. He is a man who will be brought forth on the Day of Resurrection, and it will be said (3): ‘Present his minor sins to him (4), and keep his major sins from him.’ His minor sins will then be presented to him (5), and he will be told: ‘On such-and-such a day, you did such-and-such (6), and on such-and-such a day, you did such-and-such (7).’
“He will say, ‘Yes,’ unable to deny them, while fearing that his major sins will be presented to him. Then he will be told: ‘Indeed (8), in place of every evil deed, you shall have a good deed.’
“He will say, ‘My Lord (9), I did other things that I do not see here.’”
I indeed saw the Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—laugh until his teeth were visible.] (10).
(1) Muslim, 1:177 (*The Book of Faith*, “The Chapter on the Lowest-Ranking Inhabitant of Paradise”). With slight differences in wording, the hadith appears with the same chain of transmission in *Sunan al-Tirmidhī*, 4:112–113 (*The Book of the Description of Hellfire*, “The Chapter on the Report That Hellfire Has Two Breaths and on Those among the People of *Tawhīd* (Monotheism) Who Will Emerge from the Fire”).
(2) “May Allah be pleased with him” is an addition found in A and B.
(3) ʿ: “Then it will be said to him”; “to him” does not occur in Muslim.
(4) ʿ: “his evil deeds.” The reading adopted here, “his minor sins,” occurs in B and A and is also the wording in Muslim.
(5) ʿ: “Then Allah will present them to him.” The reading adopted here, “His minor sins will then be presented to him,” is the wording in Muslim.
(6) ʿ: “on such-and-such a day, such-and-such.”
(7) ʿ: “on such-and-such a day, such-and-such.”
(8) ʿ: *inna* (“indeed”), without the prefixed *fa-* (“then”).
(9) ʿ: *ay Rabbī* (“O my Lord”).
(10) The complete text of the hadith is omitted from N and M, while some of its words are omitted from A.
