Minhaj as-SunnahIbn Taimiya

neither the righteous nor the wicked can transgress.” (1)

They said, “Refuge is not to be sought in anything created.”

Likewise, it is established that he said:

“O Allah, I seek refuge in Your pleasure from Your wrath, in Your protection from Your punishment, and in You from You. I cannot fully enumerate Your praise.” (2)

They said, “Refuge is not to be sought in anything created,” yet the Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—sought refuge in pleasure and protection. Therefore, according to the imams of the Sunnah, these were among the things that subsist in the Lord Most High, just as His words subsist in Him; they were not created things, which can only exist apart from Him.] (3)

(1) In *al-Muwatta*, 2/950–951 (Book of Poetry, Chapter on What Is Enjoined concerning Seeking Refuge): “It was related to me from Mālik, from Yahyā ibn Saīd, who said: The Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—was taken on the Night Journey and saw a powerful jinn pursuing him with a flame. Whenever the Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—turned around, he saw him. Gabriel said, ‘Shall I teach you some words to say? If you say them, his flame will be extinguished and he will fall flat on his face.’ The Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—said, ‘Yes.’ Gabriel said, ‘Then say: I seek refuge in the Noble Face of Allah and in the perfect words of Allah, which neither the righteous nor the wicked can transgress, from the evil of what descends from heaven and the evil of what ascends into it, from the evil of what He created on earth and the evil of what emerges from it, from the trials of night and day, and from all that comes by night and day, except that which comes bearing good, O Most Merciful.’” Shortly thereafter, the hadith is also transmitted in *mursal* form from Ka'b al-Ahbār, 2/951–952. I did not find Imam Ahmad citing this hadith as evidence in his treatise *al-Radd ala al-Jahmiyya wa al-Zanādiqa* (*Refutation of the Jahmiyya and the Heretics*). However, al-Dārimī’s *al-Radd ala al-Jahmiyya* (*Refutation of the Jahmiyya*), Ibn Khuzayma’s *Kitāb al-Tawhīd* (*Book of Monotheism*), and other works cite as evidence other hadiths in which the Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—sought refuge in the perfect words of Allah. One example is the report in *Sahīh Muslim*, 4/2081 (Book of Remembrance and Supplication, Chapter on Seeking Refuge from an Evil Decree), from Abū Hurayra, who said: “A man came to the Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—and said, ‘O Messenger of Allah, how I suffered from a scorpion that stung me last night!’ He replied, ‘Had you said when evening came, “I seek refuge in the perfect words of Allah from the evil of what He has created,” it would not have harmed you.’” See also: al-Dārimī, *al-Radd ala al-Jahmiyya*, p. (2) The hadith is in *Sahīh Muslim*, 1/352 (Book of Prayer, Chapter on What Is Said While Bowing and Prostrating). The hadith and the commentary on it appeared previously at 2/159.
