Minhaj as-SunnahIbn Taimiya

and found that he relied on the proposition that bodies are never devoid of conjunction and separation, on the basis that bodies are composed of indivisible atoms. He therefore argued that they necessarily entail this type of accident, which is temporally originated because it belongs to the locative states. Yet this argument rests upon the indivisible atom, which the majority of rational people, Muslims and others alike, deny.

The purpose here is to explain the foundational principles of the various sects and to show that the doctrine of these Rāfidī Mu'tazilites is among the most corrupt doctrines held by the sects of the Ummah. They possess neither scriptural nor rational proof by which they could vindicate themselves against their brethren among the people of innovation, although those others too are misguided innovators (1). They are utterly at odds with them; so how could they have any proof against Ahl al-Sunnah, who occupy the middle way within Islam, just as Islam occupies the middle way among the religions?!

Thus, if the one who denies corporeality says:

“The proof that they are temporally originated is that they necessarily entail accidents” (2)] (3),

they will say to him (4):

“This is not your position or [the position] of your Mu'tazilite leaders (5); rather, it is the position of

(1) The original text in (ʿ) reads: “Even though that too was also misguided innovators.” This wording is untenable; the reading I have adopted is closer to the intended meaning. (2) “Thus, if the one who denies corporeality says …,” etc., repeats the objection raised on the preceding page (p. 258), beginning, “If he says, ‘The proof …,’” etc.; the intervening material is a digression. (3) The text in square brackets is omitted from B, A, N, and M. Passages from this omission were written in the margin of (ʿ), beginning with “I have seen al-Ashʿarī’s discussion” and ending with “the majority of rational people, Muslims and others alike, deny the indivisible atom.” The following comment was then added: “I say: The matter is not so, for the majority of rational Muslims do not deny it, since most of the mutakallimūn (speculative theologians) affirm it. Moreover, a group of ancient philosophers before Aristotle affirmed it; it was not something invented by the mutakallimūn.” (4) “To him” is omitted from B and A. (5) N and M read: “your position and your leaders.”
