ʿAbbās was at a funeral when he heard a man say:
“O Lord of the Quran, have mercy on him.”
Ibn ʿAbbās said:
“Enough! The Quran is from Him. The Quran is the speech of Allah and is not a thing subject to lordship. It came forth from Him, and to Him it shall return.”
Muhammad ibn ʿAmmār ibn al-Hārith narrated to us: Abū Marwān al-Tabarī narrated to us in Mecca—meaning al-Hakam ibn Muhammad: Sufyān ibn ʿUyayna narrated to us, from ʿAmr ibn Dīnār, who said:
“For seventy years, I have heard our elders say, ‘The Quran is the speech of Allah and is not created.’”
In another narration:
“It originated from Him, and to Him it shall return.”
This was related (1) by more than one narrator from [Sufyān] (2) ibn ʿUyayna, from ʿAmr. Al-Bukhārī also related it in The Creation of the Acts of the Servants (3).
Ibn Abī Hātim said:
“My father narrated to us: al-ʿAbbās ibn ʿAbd al-ʿAzīm narrated to us: Ruwaym ibn Yazīd al-Muqri narrated to us: ʿAbd Allah ibn ʿAbbās narrated to us, from Yūnus ibn Bukayr, from Jaʿfar ibn Muhammad, from his father, who said:
“ʿAlī ibn al-Husayn was asked about the Quran. He replied:
“‘It is neither a creator nor a created thing; rather, it is the speech of the Creator.’
“Abū Zurʿa also narrated it from Yahyā ibn Mansūr, from Ruwaym, and related the same report.
“Jaʿfar ibn Muhammad ibn Hārūn narrated to us (4): ʿAbd al-Rahmān ibn Musʿab narrated to us: Mūsā ibn Dāwud al-Kūfī narrated to us, from an unnamed man, from Jaʿfar ibn Muhammad, from his father, who related that he asked him:
“‘Some people say that the Quran is created?’
“He replied:
“‘It is neither a creator nor a created thing; rather, it is the speech of Allah.’”
