Minhaj as-SunnahIbn Taimiya

that Ahl al-Sunnah uphold (1) the truth without qualification, and that there is no doctrine established by revelation (2) and reason that has not been upheld by the leading authorities (3) of Ahl al-Sunnah. This is the point intended here.

[The Sixth Aspect: Most Early Imamites Were Corporealists]

The sixth aspect (4) is to say to this Imamite: You said, “The doctrine of the Imamites has the greatest claim to truth, is the most truthful, and is the freest from all traces of falsehood, because they believe that Allah alone possesses beginningless eternity and pre-existence, while [all] (5) else was brought into being; for He is One (6), neither a body nor in a place, since otherwise He would have been brought into being.”

Yet it has become clear that most of the [early] (7) Imamites held the opposite view, including Hishām ibn al-Hakam, Hishām ibn Sālim, Yūnus (8) ibn Abd al-Rahmān al-Qummī—the client of the family of Yaqtīn—and Zurārah ibn A'yan (9)

(1) N and M read the singular form: “says.” (2) N alone reads: “was established by revelation.” (3) N and M read: “the majority.” (4) N and M read: “the fifth,” which is an error. The discussion of the fifth aspect began on p. 102. (5) “All” is omitted in N alone. (6) N alone reads *ahad* (“One”). (7) “Early” is omitted in N alone. (8) M alone reads: “and Yūsuf,” which is an error. (9) N and M read: “and Zurārah ibn Abī A'yan,” which is an error. Zurārah ibn A'yan ibn Sinsin was the leader of the Zurāriyyah, one of the Rāfidī sects. His father was a Byzantine slave belonging to a man of Banū Shaybān, and his grandfather was a monk. Ibn al-Nadīm states in *al-Fihrist*, p. 220: “Zurārah was a byname; his personal name was Abd Rabbih . . . He was the foremost of the Shi'ah in jurisprudence, hadith, knowledge of *kalām*, and Shi'ism.” Zurārah died in 150 AH. It is said that he initially upheld the imamate of Abd Allāh ibn Ja'far, but later recognized Mūsā ibn Ja'far (al-Kāzim) as imam. Shortly, Ibn Taymiyyah will cite a Zurāriyyah doctrine concerning the fundamentals of religion, transmitted from al-Ash'arī’s *Maqālāt*. For Zurārah, see *Rijāl al-Najāshī*, pp. 132–133; *Rijāl al-Tūsī*, pp. 123–124, 201, 350; al-Tūsī, *al-Fihrist*, p. 100; *Rijāl al-Kashshī*, pp. 88–107; Ibn al-Athīr, *al-Lubāb*, 1/498; *Lisān al-Mīzān*, 2/473–474; al-Ziriklī, *al-A'lām*, 3/75. On the Zurāriyyah, see *Maqālāt al-Islāmiyyīn*, 1/100, 106–107; *al-Farq bayna al-Firaq*, p. 43; al-Maqrīzī, *al-Khitat*, 2/353; and *al-Milal wa-l-Nihal*, 1/150.
