“O uncle, say, ‘There is no deity except Allah’—a declaration with which I may plead on your behalf before Allah.” (1)

He also said:

“Whoever’s final words are ‘There is no deity except Allah’ will enter Paradise.” (2)

And he said:

“Prompt those among you who are dying to say, ‘There is no deity except Allah.’” (3)

All these hadiths are found in the Sahih collections.

(1) The hadith is narrated by Sa'īd ibn al-Musayyab from his father, al-Musayyab ibn Hazn (may Allah be pleased with him), in al-Bukhārī, 2/95 (Book of Funerals, chapter “When a Polytheist Says at the Point of Death, ‘There Is No Deity except Allah’”), 5/52 (Book of the Virtues of the Ansār, chapter “The Story of Abū Tālib”), 6 (Book of Quranic Exegesis, Sūrat Barā'a, on the words of the Exalted, “It is not for the Prophet and those who believe to seek forgiveness for the polytheists...” [al-Tawbah 9:113]), 6/112–113 (Book of Quranic Exegesis, Sūrat al-Qasas, chapter “Indeed, You Do Not Guide Whom You Love” [al-Qasas 28:56]), and 8/138–139 (Book of Oaths and Vows, chapter “If One Says, ‘By Allah, I Will Not Speak Today...’”); Muslim, 1/54–55 (Book of Faith, chapter “Evidence for the Validity of the Islam of One Overtaken by Death...”); Muslim also narrated the hadith with the same meaning through two chains from Abū Hurayra (may Allah be pleased with him); and *al-Musnad* (al-Halabī ed.), 5/433. (2) The hadith is narrated from Mu'ādh ibn Jabal (may Allah be pleased with him) in *Sunan Abī Dāwūd*, 3/258–259 (Book of Funerals, chapter “On Prompting the Dying”); al-Hākim’s *al-Mustadrak*, 1/351 (Book of Funerals, chapter “One Whose Final Words Were...”); al-Hākim said, “This hadith has an authentic chain of transmission, though al-Bukhārī and Muslim did not record it,” and al-Dhahabī concurred; and al-Tabrīzī’s *Mishkāt al-Masābīh*, 1/511. Al-Albānī also classified it as authentic (t [0–9]). (3) The hadith is narrated from Abū Sa'īd al-Khudrī and Abū Hurayra (may Allah be pleased with them both) in Muslim, 2/631 (Book of Funerals, chapter “Prompting the Dying to Say, ‘There Is No Deity except Allah’...”); *Sunan Abī Dāwūd*, 3/259 (Book of Funerals, chapter “On Prompting the Dying”); *Sunan al-Tirmidhī*, 2/225 (Book of Funerals, chapter “Prompting the Sick Person at the Point of Death and Supplicating for Him”). Al-Tirmidhī said, “Reports on this subject are also narrated from Abū Hurayra, Umm Maslama, 'Ā'isha, Jābir, and Su'dā al-Murriyya, the wife of Talha ibn 'Ubayd Allāh.” It is also found in *Sunan Ibn Mājah*, 1/464 (Book of Funerals, chapter “Reports Concerning Prompting the Dying to Say, ‘There Is No Deity except Allah’”), and *al-Musnad* (al-Halabī ed.), 3/3.
