Minhaj as-SunnahIbn Taimiya

was the leader (1) of the Shia. He killed Ubayd Allah (2) ibn Ziyād and publicly championed al-Husayn, going so far as to kill his killer. By doing so, he sought favor with Muhammad ibn al-Hanafiyya (3) and the Prophet’s household. He then claimed prophethood and alleged that Gabriel came to him.

It is authentically established in Sahih Muslim that the Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—said:

“Among Thaqīf there will be a liar and a destroyer.” (4)

The liar was al-Mukhtār ibn Abī—

(1) A and B read: “the trusted one.” (2) N reads: “Abd Allah,” which is an error. (3) See his biographical notice above, 1:12 (n. [0–9]). (4) Muslim relates a lengthy hadith in his Sahih, 4:1971–1972, in the “Book of the Merits of the Companions,” chapter “The Liar and Destroyer of Thaqīf.” It states that Asmā bint Abī Bakr—may Allah be pleased with her—said to al-Hajjāj: “The Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—told us that among Thaqīf there would be a liar and a destroyer. We have already seen the liar; as for the destroyer, I can only think that you are he.” The narrator said: “He then got up and left her without replying.” Al-Musnad, al-Maārif ed., 7:18 (hadith no. 4790), relates from Ibn Umar that the Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—said: “Among Thaqīf there are a destroyer and a liar.” Al-Nawawī states in Sharh Muslim, 16:100: “The word mubīr means ‘one who destroys.’”
