[In sum] (1), there can be no doubt that the hypocrites were insignificant, humiliated, and subjugated (2), especially during the final days of the Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—and at the expedition of Tabūk. For Allah Most High said:

“They say, ‘If we return to Medina, the more powerful will surely expel the weaker.’ Yet all might belongs to Allah, His Messenger, and the believers, but the hypocrites do not know.”

[Surah al-Munāfiqūn: 8]

Thus, He declared that might belongs to the believers, not to the hypocrites. It is therefore known that might and strength belonged to the believers, whereas the hypocrites were humiliated among them.

It is consequently impossible that the Companions who were the mightiest among the Muslims could have been hypocrites. Rather, this entails that the mightier a person was, the greater his faith. It is well known (3) that
