Minhaj as-SunnahIbn Taimiya

60–61]. Since Allah did not incite him against them or have them utterly slain, and instead they continued to live alongside him in Medina, this proves that they desisted.

All those who were with him at al-Hudaybiyah pledged allegiance to him (1) beneath the tree, except al-Jadd ibn Qays (2), who hid beneath (3) a red camel.

Likewise, it is stated in the hadith:

“All of them will enter Paradise except the man with the red camel.” (4)

(1) A, B: “they pledged allegiance to him.” (2) In *al-Musnad* (al-Halabī ed.), 3:396: “Abū al-Zubayr reported from Jābir, who said: ‘Al-Abbās was holding the hand of the Messenger of Allah—peace and blessings be upon him—while the Messenger of Allah—peace and blessings be upon him—was concluding the agreement with us. When we had finished, the Messenger of Allah—peace and blessings be upon him—said, “I have accepted [your pledge] and given [my commitment].”’ He continued: ‘That day I asked Jābir, “How did you pledge allegiance to the Messenger of Allah—peace and blessings be upon him? Was it a pledge to die?” He replied, “No. Rather, we pledged to him that we would not flee.” I asked him, “What about the Day of the Tree?” He replied, “I held the hand of Umar ibn al-Khattāb until we had pledged allegiance to him.” I asked, “How many were you?” He replied, “We were fourteen hundred. All of us pledged allegiance to him except al-Jadd ibn Qays, who hid beneath a camel. That day we slaughtered seventy sacrificial camels, one camel for every seven men.”’ For the account of al-Jadd ibn Qays hiding and not giving his pledge, see Ibn Saʿd, *al-Tabaqāt*, 2:100; Ibn Hishām, *al-Sīra*, 3:330; al-Tabarī, *al-Tārīkh* (al-Maʿārif ed.), 2:632; and al-Tabarī, *al-Tafsīr*, 26:54–55. In *al-Isāba* (1:230), Ibn Hajar gives his full name as al-Jadd ibn Qays ibn Sakhr ibn Khansāʾ ibn Sinān ibn Ubayd ibn Ghanm ibn Kaʿb ibn Salama al-Ansārī, Abū Abd Allāh. He states that al-Jadd was the chief of Banū Salama and Jābir’s maternal uncle, and that he carried Jābir, who was then a child, at the Pledge of al-Aqaba. Ibn Hajar deemed the chain of transmission of this hadith strong. He then wrote: “Abd al-Razzāq reported from Qatāda concerning the words of Allah Most High, ‘They mixed a righteous deed with another that was evil’: ‘It was revealed concerning several of those who remained behind during the expedition to Tabūk, including Abū Lubāba and al-Jadd ibn Qays; He did not turn toward them in forgiveness.’” Ibn Hajar also stated that al-Jadd repented sincerely and died during the caliphate of Uthmān. (3) A, B: “behind.” (4) I have not found the hadith in this precise wording, but expressions conveying its meaning occur in a lengthy hadith narrated by Muslim from Jābir ibn Abd Allāh—may Allah be pleased with him. Its text appears in Muslim, 4:2144–45 (*The Book of the Characteristics and Rulings of the Hypocrites*, Chapter One): The Messenger of Allah—peace and blessings be upon him—said: “Whoever ascends the mountain pass, the Pass of al-Murār, will have his sins expunged just as those of the Children of Israel were expunged.” Jābir said: “Our cavalry—the cavalry of Banū al-Khazraj—were the first to ascend it, after which the people followed in succession. The Messenger of Allah—peace and blessings be upon him—then said: ‘All of you are forgiven except the man with the red camel.’ We went to him and said, ‘Come, so that the Messenger of Allah—peace and blessings be upon him—may seek forgiveness for you.’ He replied, ‘By Allah, finding my lost property is dearer to me than having your companion seek forgiveness for me.’” Jābir added: “The man was searching for something he had lost.” Al-Nawawī states in his commentary, 17:126–27: “The phrase ‘Whoever ascends the mountain pass, the Pass of al-Murār’ appears thus in the first narration: *al-Murār*, with the letter *mīm* pronounced *u* and the *r* ungeminated. In the second narration it is *al-Murār* or *al-Marār*—with either *u* or *a* on the *mīm*, the transmitter being uncertain. Some manuscripts give either *u* or *i*. Allah knows best. *Al-murār* is a bitter plant. A *thaniyya* is originally a road between two mountains; this particular pass is near al-Hudaybiya.” The Qādī stated: “It is said that this man was the hypocrite al-Jadd ibn Qays.” See also Ibn Taymiyya, *al-Istiqāma*, 2:265, 287–88.
