the followers of al-Mughīrah ibn Sa‘īd (1).
Al-A‘mash said: “You need not mention (2) this, for I would not put it past them to say, ‘We caught al-A‘mash (3) with a woman.’”
These are established reports narrated (4) by [Abū Abd Allāh] (5) ibn Battah in (al-Ibānah al-Kubrā [The Greater Elucidation]) (6), as well as by others. Abū al-Qāsim al-Tabarī also related (* al-Shāfi‘i’s statement concerning them through two routes, in a narration from al-Rabī‘ (7), who said: “I heard *) (8) al-Shāfi‘i say: “Among the adherents of religious innovation, I have never seen a people
(1) He was al-Mughīra ibn Sa‘īd al-Bajalī, Abū Abd Allāh al-Kūfī. He was a *mawlā* (client or affiliate) of Khālid ibn Abd Allāh al-Qasrī. When he claimed prophethood for himself, Khālid killed, crucified, and burned him around 120 AH. Al-Dhahabī described al-Mughīra as “the lying *Rāfidī* (rejectionist Shi‘i)” (*Mīzān al-I‘tidāl*, 3/191). See his biography in *Mīzān al-I‘tidāl*, 3/191–192; *al-Milal wa-l-Nihal*, 1/157–158; al-Isfarāyīnī, p. [0–9]3; *al-Farq bayna al-Firaq*, pp. 146–148; and *al-Maqālāt*, 1/68–73, 75–76.
(2) A and B read: “that you mention.”
(3) Al-A‘mash was Sulaimān ibn Mihrān al-Kāhilī al-Kūfī. *Mīzān al-I‘tidāl*, 1/423, states: “He was one of the trustworthy imams and was counted among the younger Successors. They faulted him only for *tadlīs* (concealing a transmitter’s identity). He assumed the best of those who narrated to him and from whom he transmitted. We cannot categorically assert that he knew that the person whose identity he concealed was weak, for that would be forbidden.” Ibn Hajar related from al-Ijlī that al-A‘mash had Shi‘i leanings (*Tahdhīb al-Tahdhīb*, 4/223). He died in 148 AH. See his biography in *Shadharāt al-Dhahab*, 1/220–223; *Tahdhīb al-Tahdhīb*, 4/222–226; and *Rawdāt al-Jannāt*, pp. 319–320.
(4) B reads: “he indeed narrated them”; A reads: “he indeed narrated it.”
(5) “Abū Abd Allāh” is an addition in A and B.
(6) Abd Allāh ibn Muhammad ibn Muhammad ibn Hamdān, Abū Abd Allāh al-Ukbarī, known as Ibn Batta, died in 387 AH. Ibn Abī Ya‘lā listed *al-Ibāna al-Kubrā* and *al-Ibāna al-Sughrā* among his works. See his biography in *Tabaqāt al-Hanābila*, 2/144–153, and *Shadharāt al-Dhahab*, 3/122–124.
(7) He was al-Rabī‘ ibn Sulaimān ibn Abd al-Jabbār al-Murādī al-Misrī, a disciple of al-Shāfi‘ī and transmitter of *al-Umm*. Al-Tirmidhī narrated from him, and Ibn Yūnus declared him trustworthy. He died in 270 AH. See al-Khazrajī, *al-Khulāsa*, p. [0–9]8; and Ibn Khallikān, 2/52–53.
(8) The text between the asterisks is omitted from A and B. In its place, A reads: “Abū al-Qāsim al-Tabarī related the statement of”; B reads: “Abū al-Qāsim al-Tabarī related *kāna* (‘was’).”
