Minhaj as-SunnahIbn Taimiya

And Allah Most High said:

“Allah was indeed pleased with the believers when they pledged allegiance to you beneath the tree. He knew what was in their hearts, so He sent tranquility upon them and rewarded them with a victory close at hand—and abundant spoils that they would take. Allah is Almighty, All-Wise. Allah has promised you abundant spoils that you will take, and He has hastened these for you and restrained the hands of the people from you, so that this may be a sign for the believers and that He may guide you to a straight path—and other spoils that you were not yet able to obtain, which Allah had already encompassed. Allah has power over all things.”

[Surah al-Fath: 18–21]

Those who pledged allegiance to him (1) beneath the tree at al-Hudaybiyyah, near Mount al-Tanīm (2) \ 321, numbered more than 1,400. They pledged allegiance to him when the polytheists prevented him from performing Umrah. He then concluded the well-known Treaty of al-Hudaybiyyah with the polytheists. This took place in Dhū al-Qadah of the sixth year after the Hijrah. He then returned [with them] (3) (م) to Medina and led them on the expedition to Khaybar, which Allah enabled them to conquer (4) at the beginning of the seventh year. He distributed it (5) among them and denied any share in it to the Bedouin Arabs who had stayed behind (6) from al-Hudaybiyyah.

(1) A and B read: “pledged allegiance.” (2) *Al-Musnad*, 3/122 (al-Halabī ed.), relates from Anas: “On the day of al-Hudaybiyyah, eighty armed men from Mecca came down upon the Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—and his Companions from the direction of Mount al-Tanīm. He supplicated against them, and they were captured. Then this verse was revealed: ‘He is the One who withheld their hands from you and your hands from them in the valley of Mecca, after He had given you victory over them.’” He said: “That is, Mount al-Tanīm in the vicinity of Mecca.” The same hadith appears with similar wording two pages later, 3/124, also from Anas. It likewise appears with different wording in *Tafsīr al-Tabarī*, in the commentary on the preceding verse, 26/59. *Tāj al-Arūs*, under the root n-ʿ-m, states: “Al-Tanīm lies three or four miles from honored Mecca and is the closest point outside the sacred precinct to the Noble House. It was so named because Mount Nuaym—on the pattern of Zubayr—is on its right, Mount Nāim is on its left, and the valley is called Namān, with an a-vowel on its first letter.” See also *Mujam al-Buldān*, s.v. “al-Tanīm,” and *Mujam mā Istajam*, 1. (3) “With them” is omitted in N. (4) B alone reads: “then Allah granted them victory.” (5) N reads: “then he distributed it.” (6) N and M read: “and he distributed it among them and the Bedouin Arabs who had stayed behind …,” etc. This is an obvious error.
