Ibn Battah and others narrated the following report through [Abū Badr, who said: We were told by] (1) Abd Allāh ibn Zayd, from Talhah ibn Musarrif, from Musab ibn Sad, from Sad ibn Abī Waqqās, who said:
“People occupy three (2) stations. Two have passed, and one remains. The best state for you is to belong to this remaining station.”
Then he recited:
“‘It is for the poor Emigrants who were driven from their homes and possessions, seeking bounty from Allah and His pleasure.’
“These are the Emigrants, and this station has passed.”
Then he recited (3):
“‘And those who had made the Home their abode and embraced faith before them love those who emigrated to them and feel no desire in their hearts for what they were given. They give them preference over themselves, even though they themselves are in need.’” (4)
He then said:
“These are the Helpers, and this station has passed.”
Then he recited:
“‘And those who came after them say, “Our Lord, forgive us and our brothers who preceded us in faith, and place no rancor in our hearts toward those who believe. Our Lord, You are truly Most Compassionate, Most Merciful.”’
“Those two stations have passed, and this one remains. The best state for you is to belong to this remaining station: to seek Allah’s forgiveness for them.” (5)
He also narrated, through his chain of transmission, that Mālik ibn Anas said:
“Whoever reviles the righteous predecessors shall have no share in property acquired without battle, for Allah Most High says: ‘And those who came after them’—to the end of the verse. (6)
