Minhaj as-SunnahIbn Taimiya

Lut ibn Yahyā(1), Hishām ibn Muhammad ibn al-Sā’ib(2), and others like them who are known by the scholars to be liars—even though people such as these rank among(3) the foremost authorities upon whom they rely for transmitted material. Indeed, they rely on persons steeped in ignorance and fabrication, who are neither mentioned in the books nor known to scholars of narrator criticism.

[The Rāfidah Are the Most Mendacious of the Sects]

The scholars of transmission, narration, and chains of transmission unanimously agree that the Rāfidah are the most mendacious of the sects, and that lying among them dates back to early times. The leading scholars of Islam therefore recognized them as being particularly notorious for their profusion of lies.

Abū Hātim al-Rāzī(4) said: “I heard Yūnus ibn Abd al-A‘lā(5) say:(6) Ashhab ibn Abd al-Azīz(7) said: Mālik was asked about”

(1) A and B read: “Abī Mikhnaf Lūt ibn Alī,” which is an error. *Mīzān al-i‘tidāl*, 2/260, states: “Lūt ibn Yahyā, Abū Mikhnaf, was a discredited chronicler who cannot be trusted. Abū Hātim and others rejected his reports. Ibn Adī said: ‘He was an ardent Shia and one of their chroniclers.’ He died before 170 AH.” See also his biography in *Rawdāt al-jannāt*, p. 732, and *Rijāl al-Najāshī*, p. 245. (2) He is Hishām ibn Muhammad ibn al-Sā’ib al-Kalbī. *Mīzān al-i‘tidāl*, 3/256, states: “Al-Dāraqutnī and others declared him rejected as a narrator. Ibn Asākir said: ‘He was a Rāfidī and was not trustworthy.’ He died in 204 AH.” See also his biography in *Rijāl al-Najāshī*, pp. [0–9]39–340. (3) The word *min* (“among”) is omitted from A and B. (4) Abū Hātim al-Rāzī, the eminent hadith master and a contemporary of al-Bukhārī and Muslim, was Muhammad ibn Idrīs al-Hanzalī. He was born in Rayy in 195 AH and died in Baghdad in 227 AH. See his biography in *Tahdhīb al-Tahdhīb*, 9/31–34; *Tadhkirat al-huffāz*, 2/557–559; *Tārīkh Baghdād*, 2–77; *Tabaqāt al-Hanābila*, 1/283–386; Sezgin, 1/273–274; and *al-A‘lām*, 6. (5) Yūnus ibn Abd al-A‘lā ibn Maysara, Abū Mūsā al-Misrī, died in 264 AH. Al-Shāfi‘ī said of him: “I have not seen anyone in Egypt more intelligent than Yūnus ibn Abd al-A‘lā.” See his biography in Ibn Khallikān, 6/247–250, and *al-Khulāsa* by al-Khazrajī, p. [0–9]79. (6) N and M read *qāla* (“he said”). (7) Abū Amr Ashhab ibn Abd al-Azīz ibn Dāwūd al-Qaysī died in 204 AH. See his biography in Ibn Khallikān, 1/215–217, and *Tahdhīb al-Tahdhīb*, 1/359–360.
