Indeed, (1) when calamity engulfed everyone with the death of the Prophet—peace and blessings be upon him—and the people differed after him, their opinions multiplying in accordance with their whims, some of them sought authority for himself without any right, and most of the people pledged allegiance to him (2) in pursuit of worldly gain. This was just as Umar ibn Saʿd (3) chose to rule Rayy for a few short days (4) when he was given the choice between that and killing al-Husayn, (5) despite knowing that whoever killed him would be in the Fire, (6) and stating as much (7) in his poetry, (8) in which he says:
(1) “Indeed” is omitted from N and M, but is present in K (= Minhāj al-Karāmah, p. 89). M reads: “because.”
(2) “And pledged allegiance to him”: This is the reading in N, B, and K. M and A read: “and followed him.”
(3) A, M, and B read: “Amr ibn Saʿd,” which is incorrect. The reading adopted here, found in K and N, is “Umar ibn Saʿd.” He was Umar ibn Saʿd ibn Abī Waqqās. Ubayd Allah ibn Ziyād appointed him governor of Rayy and Hamadhān. When al-Husayn set out, Ubayd Allah ordered Umar to fight him. Umar was averse to doing so and asked to be excused, but Ubayd Allah threatened to dismiss him. Umar then advanced with his army toward al-Husayn and began negotiating with him. He nearly succeeded in resolving the dispute without fighting, but Abd Allah insisted that al-Husayn pledge allegiance to Yazīd ibn Muʿāwiya. Fighting then broke out between Umar’s army and al-Husayn’s army, and al-Husayn—may Allah be pleased with him—was killed in 61 AH. When al-Mukhtār ibn Abī Ubayd al-Thaqafī, the liar, took control of Kufa, Umar ibn Saʿd was killed in 66 AH. See al-Tabarī (Al-Maʿārif ed.), the account of Umar’s appointment over Rayy, 5:409–410; the events of 61 AH, 5:400–467; and the account of al-Mukhtār’s killing of Umar, 6:60–62. See also Ibn Saʿd, al-Tabaqāt, 5:168; al-Masʿūdī, Murūj al-Dhahab (Al-Tijāriyya ed., 1377/1958), 3:70–72; and al-Ziriklī, al-Aʿlām, 5:205–206.
(4) N reads: “many few days.”
(5) K and M read: “al-Husayn—peace be upon him.”
(6) K reads: “that killing him leads to the Fire.”
(7) B reads: “and his choosing that.”
(8) A reads: “in poetry.”
