much that lay concealed. [The Messenger of Allah] (1)—peace and blessings be upon him—had foretold what would actually come to pass.
Hudhayfah related (2) this during the caliphates of Umar and Uthmān, before the civil strife. When news of Uthmān’s killing reached him, he knew that the civil strife had come. He died forty days later, before the fighting began (3).
The Prophet—peace and blessings be upon him—had also foretold that thereafter leaders would arise who would neither follow his guidance nor adhere to his sunnah, and that men would arise whose hearts were the hearts of devils in human bodies. Yet despite this, he commanded that the ruler be heard and obeyed, even if he struck your back and took your wealth. Thus it became clear (4) that the leader to be obeyed is whoever [has] (5) authority, whether he is just or unjust.
Likewise, the Sahih records the hadith of Ibn Umar from the Prophet—peace and blessings be upon him:
“Whoever withdraws from obedience to [a leader] (6) will meet Allah on the Day of Resurrection with no argument in his defense. Whoever dies without being bound by a pledge of allegiance dies a death of the Age of Ignorance. However, no one is to be obeyed in disobedience to Allah.” (7)
