on the Day of Resurrection a coat of scabies and a garment of pitch.”) (1)

It is also established in the Sahih that he said:

(“Whoever is wailed over will be punished on account of the wailing over him.”) (2)

There are many hadiths to this effect. These people engage in slapping their cheeks, tearing their garments, invoking the cries of the Age of Ignorance, and other

(1) The hadith narrated from Abū Mālik al-Asharī—may Allah be pleased with him—appears together with another hadith preceding it in Muslim, 2/644 (Book of Funerals, chapter “The Stern Prohibition of Wailing in Lamentation”). The first hadith begins: “Four practices in my community belong to the Age of Ignorance.” The second hadith reads: “If a woman who wails in lamentation does not repent before her death, she will be raised on the Day of Resurrection wearing a garment of pitch and a coat of scabies.” The hadith is also narrated with some variations in wording in Sunan Ibn Mājah, 1/503–504 (Book of Funerals, chapter “The Prohibition of Wailing in Lamentation”), and al-Musnad (al-Halabī ed.), 5/342–343. Ibn Mājah also related in his Sunan, 1/405, a hadith with similar wording from Ibn Abbās—may Allah be pleased with them both—and the accompanying note explains its weakness. (2) In A and B, this hadith appears before the preceding hadith, and both read: “Whoever is wailed over . . . on account of the wailing over him.” The hadith is narrated with this wording from Ibn Umar—may Allah be pleased with them both—in al-Musnad (al-Maārif ed.), 2/186–187, where it reads: “. . . on account of the wailing over him on the Day of Resurrection.” Shaykh Ahmad Shākir authenticated the hadith. It is also narrated from al-Mughīra ibn Shuba—may Allah be pleased with him—with the wording, “Whoever is wailed over will be punished on account of the wailing over him”—with a longer version in some narrations—in al-Bukhārī, 2/80 (Book of Funerals, chapter “The Reprehensibility of Wailing over the Deceased”). It begins: “I heard the Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—say: ‘Indeed, lying about me is not like lying about anyone else.’” See also Muslim, 2/644 (Book of Funerals, chapter “The Deceased Is Punished Because of His Family’s Weeping over Him”); Sunan al-Tirmidhī, 2/234–235 (Book of Funerals, chapter “The Reprehensibility of Wailing”); and al-Musnad (al-Halabī ed.), 4/245–252. Al-Nawawī discussed this hadith and others like it at length in his Commentary on Muslim, 6/228–229. He stated in part: “The scholars differed concerning these hadiths. The majority interpreted them as referring to someone who instructed that people should weep and wail over him after his death, and whose instruction was then carried out. Such a person is punished because of his family’s weeping and wailing over him, since it occurred at his behest and is attributable to him. They said that if a person’s family weep and wail over him without any instruction from him, he is not punished, because Allah Most High says: ‘No bearer of burdens shall bear the burden of another’ [Surah al-Anām: 164]. They also said that it was customary among the Arabs to leave such instructions. An example is the statement of Tarafa ibn al-Abd: ‘When I die, mourn me as I deserve, and tear open your garment collar for me, O daughter of Mabad.’ They said that the hadith was therefore stated without qualification because it was understood in light of their customary practice.”
