It is reported in the Musnad from Ubayy ibn Kaʿb that the Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—said:
“Whenever you hear someone invoking the tribal rallying cry of the pre-Islamic age of ignorance, tell him to bite his mother’s vulva—and do not use a euphemism.” (1)
It is also reported in the Sunan that he said:
“Allah has removed from you the arrogance of the pre-Islamic age of ignorance and its boasting of forefathers. People are of two kinds: a pious believer and a wretched sinner.” (2)
As for the caliphate belonging to Quraysh, since this formed part of his revealed law and religion (3), the texts establishing it were well known, transmitted, and handed down, and the Companions would cite them—in contrast to
(1) The hadith is narrated from Ubayy ibn Kaʿb—may Allah be pleased with him—in al-Musnad (Halabi ed.), 5/136. Ibn al-Athīr states in al-Nihāya, 4/256: “Hence the hadith: ‘Whoever invokes a tribal rallying cry from the Age of Ignorance, tell him to bite his father’s penis, without using a euphemism.’ That is, say to him: ‘Bite your father’s penis.’” Lisān al-ʿArab states: “A woman’s han is her vulva.”
(2) The hadith is narrated from Abū Hurayra—may Allah be pleased with him—in Sunan Abī Dāwūd, 4/450 (Book of Etiquette, chapter “Boasting of One’s Lineage”). Its wording is: “Allah, Mighty and Majestic, has removed from you the arrogance of the Age of Ignorance and its pride in forefathers. A person is either a pious believer or a wretched sinner. You are the children of Adam, and Adam was created from dust. Men must cease boasting of their people, who are merely coals of Hell; otherwise, they will surely be more insignificant in Allah’s sight than dung beetles that push foul matter with their noses.” Lisān al-ʿArab states under the root ʿ-b-b: “Al-ʿubbiyya and al-ʿibbiyya mean arrogance and pride… The ʿubbiyya of the Age of Ignorance is its haughtiness. The hadith states: ‘Allah has relieved you of the arrogance of the Age of Ignorance and its glorification of its forefathers,’ meaning pride.” The commentator on Sunan Abī Dāwūd said: “Juʿlān is the plural of juʿal—on the morphological pattern surad—a small black creature that rolls excrement with its nose.” The hadith, with variations in wording, is also found in Sunan al-Tirmidhī, 5/390–391 (Book of Virtues, chapter “Concerning Thaqīf and Banū Hanīfa”). Al-Tirmidhī said: “This is a hasan hadith.” It is also found in al-Musnad (al-Maʿārif ed.), 16/300; Ahmad Shākir—may Allah have mercy on him—graded it authentic, while al-Albānī graded it hasan in Sahīh al-Jāmiʿ al-Saghīr, 2/119.
