Muhammad (1)—105, which states that he died in 148 AH—on the authority of his father (2), on the authority of Abd Allāh ibn Ja'far (3), who said: “Abū Bakr governed us. What an excellent caliph he was—the most merciful to us and the most tender toward us.” (4)
He said:
“I also heard Mu'āwiyah ibn Qurrah (5) say, ‘The Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—appointed Abū Bakr as his successor.’” (6)
Among those who held that Abū Bakr had been designated as successor were some who maintained that this designation was clear and explicit. They cited as evidence the Companions’ agreement in calling him the Successor to the Messenger of Allah
(1) Ja'far ibn Muhammad ibn Alī ibn al-Husayn al-Hāshimī, Abū Abd Allāh, known as Ja'far al-Sādiq. Al-Dhahabī stated concerning him (*Mīzān al-I'tidāl*, 1/192): “One of the eminent imams: righteous, truthful, and of great standing. Al-Bukhārī did not rely on him as an authority.” Abū Hātim said: “He is trustworthy; no inquiry need be made about one such as him.” His biography appears in *Tahdhīb al-Tahdhīb*, 2.
(2) Muhammad ibn Alī ibn al-Husayn ibn Alī ibn Abī Tālib al-Hāshimī, Abū Ja'far al-Bāqir. He narrated from his father, and his son Ja'far narrated from him. Ibn Sa'īd said: “He was trustworthy and transmitted many hadiths, though no narrator whose reports are authoritative narrated from him.” The more correct view is that he died in 114 AH. See *Tahdhīb al-Tahdhīb*, 9/350–352.
(3) Abd Allāh ibn Ja'far ibn Abī Tālib ibn Abd al-Muttalib ibn Hāshim al-Hāshimī, known by the kunyahs Abū Muhammad and Abū Ja'far, the latter being better known. He died in 80 AH. His biography appears in Ibn Hajar’s *al-Isāba*, 2/280–281.
(4) Here ends a substantial omission in (N), beginning after the words *wa-balaghanā* (“and it has reached us”) on p. 504, lines [0–9]. In its place, (N) contains the following sentence: “He said: We have been informed that al-Hasan would swear by Allah that the Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—appointed Abū Bakr as his successor.”
(5) Mu'āwiya ibn Qurra ibn Iyās ibn Hilāl ibn Rabāb al-Muzanī, Abū Iyās al-Basrī. His biography appears in *Tahdhīb al-Tahdhīb*, 10/216–217, where Yahyā ibn Ma'īn declares him trustworthy. Al-Ijlī, al-Nasā'ī, and Abū Hātim said the same. Ibn Sa'd said: “He was trustworthy and transmitted hadiths,” and Ibn Hibbān included him among the trustworthy narrators. Matar al-A'naq reported that Mu'āwiya ibn Qurra said: “I met many Companions, including twenty-five from Muzayna.” Khalīfa and others stated that he died in 113 AH.
(6) Here ends the omission in (M). In its place, it reads: “Concerning al-Hasan, he would swear by Allah that the Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—appointed Abū Bakr as his successor.”
