al-Hanzalī (1) to al-Hasan and asked, “Did the Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—appoint Abū Bakr as his successor?”
He replied, “Is your companion in doubt? Yes, by Allah, besides whom there is no deity, he appointed him as his successor. Abū Bakr was certainly too God-fearing to seize it for himself.”
Ibn al-Mubārak said, “His appointment as successor consisted in the Prophet’s command that he lead the people in prayer. Al-Hasan regarded this as an appointment to the succession.”
He said, “Abū al-Qāsim Abd Allāh ibn Muhammad (2) also informed us; Abū Khaythama Zuhayr ibn Harb (3) narrated to us; Yahyā ibn Sulaym (4) narrated to us; Ja'far ibn narrated to us—”
(1) Muhammad ibn al-Zubayr al-Tamīmī al-Hanzalī al-Basrī. *Mīzān al-I'tidāl*, 3/57, states: “He narrated from his father, al-Hasan, and Umar ibn Abd al-Azīz…” Al-Nasā'ī said, “He is weak.” Ibn Ma'īn said, “He is of no account.” Abū Hātim said, “He is not strong; his hadith contains objectionable material.” Al-Bukhārī said, “He narrated from Hammād ibn Zayd. His hadiths are objectionable, and his reliability is questionable.” See also his biography in *Tahdhīb al-Tahdhīb*, 9/167, and al-Khazrajī, *al-Khulāsa*, p. 287.
(2) Abd Allāh ibn Muhammad ibn Abd al-Azīz, Abū al-Qāsim, the maternal grandson of Ahmad ibn Manī', al-Baghawī. Al-Dhahabī cited the criticisms leveled against him by Ibn Adī and others, but defended him, stating at the end of his biography (*Mīzān al-I'tidāl*, 2): “I say: the man is unreservedly trustworthy.” See *Lisān al-Mīzān*, 3/338–341. Al-Baghawī died in 317 and was one of Ibn Batta’s teachers. See *Tabaqāt al-Hanābila*, 1/190–192 and 2/144.
(3) Zuhayr ibn Harb ibn Shaddād al-Harashī, Abū Khaythama al-Nasā'ī. His biography appears in *Tahdhīb al-Tahdhīb*, 3/342–344, which states: “Al-Bukhārī, Muslim, Abū Dāwūd, and Ibn Mājah narrated from him, and al-Nasā'ī also transmitted reports through him.” He died in 234.
(4) Yahyā ibn Sulaym al-Tā'ifī, al-Hadhdhā' al-Khazzāz, died in 195. Some scholars deemed him trustworthy, while others deemed him weak. His biography appears in *Mīzān al-I'tidāl*, 3/292, and *Tahdhīb al-Tahdhīb*, 11/226–227. The correct reading may, however, be Yahyā ibn Sa'īd—that is, Yahyā ibn Sa'īd al-Qattān—who died in 143, 144, or 146. His biography appears in *Tahdhīb al-Tahdhīb*, 11/221–224. The biography of Ja'far al-Sādiq in *Tahdhīb al-Tahdhīb*, 2, states: “Yahyā ibn Sa'īd al-Ansārī, who was one of his peers, narrated from him… Yahyā ibn al-Madīnī said: Yahyā ibn Sa'īd was asked about him and replied, ‘I have some reservations about him; Mujālid is preferable to me.’” It then states: “He dictated the lengthy hadith to Ja'far,” meaning the hadith concerning Hajj.
