“The caliphate may belong only to the descendants (1) of Abd al-Muttalib specifically.” He considered all the descendants (2) of Abd al-Muttalib eligible for it, namely Abū Tālib, Abū Lahab, al-Abbās, and al-Hārith (3).”
He said (4): “We have heard (5) [of a man in Jordan who maintained: ‘The caliphate may belong only to the descendants of Abd Shams (6).’ He had (7) compiled a work on the subject.”
He said (8): “We have seen (9) a book written by a descendant of Umar ibn al-Khattāb (10), in which he argued that (11) the caliphate may belong specifically to the descendants of Abū Bakr and Umar alone (12).” A full discussion of the people’s disagreement concerning the imamate will follow, Allah Most High willing.
The point here is that the positions of the Rāfida are countered by analogous claims. Their claim that Alī was explicitly designated is like the claim of those others that al-Abbās was explicitly designated. The falsity of both positions is known of necessity, and neither position was ever held by any scholar,
