Minhaj as-SunnahIbn Taimiya

him and grant him peace—on the day his illness began (1). He said:

“Call your father and your brother to me so that I may write a document for Abū Bakr.”

Then he said:

“Allah and the Muslims will accept none but Abū Bakr.”

According to another wording:

“So let no aspirant covet this office.”

This hadith is found in both Sahih collections (2).

He also narrated it by way of Abū Dāwūd al-Tayālisī, from Ibn Abī Mulayka, from Āisha, who said:

“When the Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—became gravely ill, he said:

‘Call Abd al-Rahmān ibn Abī Bakr to me so that I may write a document for Abū Bakr over which the people will not disagree’ (3).

Then he said:

‘Allah forbid that the believers should disagree concerning Abū Bakr’ (4).”

He also cited hadiths

(1) “With it” is omitted from (M), (A), and (B). (2) N and M read: “in the Sahih.” This hadith is narrated from Āisha—may Allah be pleased with her—in both Sahih collections and in several places in *al-Musnad*. The version closest to the one cited here appears in *al-Musnad* (al-Halabī ed.), 6:144. Its wording is: “Abd Allāh narrated to us: My father narrated to me … from Sālih ibn Kaysān, from al-Zuhrī, from Urwa, from Āisha, who said: ‘The Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—came to me on the day his illness began. I exclaimed, “Oh, my head!” He said, “I wish that [your death] had occurred while I was still alive, so that I could prepare you for burial and bury you.” Out of jealousy, I replied, “I can just picture you that very day as a bridegroom with one of your wives!” He said, “Rather, it is my head that aches! Call your father and your brother to me so that I may write a document for Abū Bakr, for I fear that someone may say, or some aspirant may hope, ‘I have the stronger claim.’ But Allah—Mighty and Majestic—and the believers will accept none but Abū Bakr.”’” With some variations in wording, the hadith appears in al-Bukhārī, 7:119 (Book of the Sick, “The Patient’s Saying: ‘I Am in Pain’…”). Ibn Hajar states in *Fath al-Bārī*, 10:125: “The narration of Ubayd Allāh adds: ‘Then the illness from which he died began—may Allah bless him and grant him peace.’” It is also in al-Bukhārī, 9:80–81 (Book of Legal Judgments, “Appointing a Successor”); Muslim, 4:1857 (Book of the Merits of the Companions, “Some of the Merits of Abū Bakr al-Siddīq…”); and *al-Musnad* (al-Halabī ed.), 6:47, 106, where it reads: “So that no aspirant may covet Abū Bakr’s position…” (3) “The people” is omitted from (A) and (B). (4) The hadith appears in *Musnad Abī Dāwūd al-Tayālisī* (Hyderabad ed., 1321), p. [0–9] 10–211. It reads: “Then he said, ‘Leave it. Allah forbid …,’” etc.
