Minhaj as-SunnahIbn Taimiya

He said:

“This is also indicated by what Abū Bakr ibn Mālik informed us. He narrated from the Musnad of Ahmad, from Hammād ibn Salama, from Alī ibn Zayd ibn Judān, from Abd al-Rahmān ibn Abī Bakra (1), from his father, who said:

“One day, the Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—asked:

‘Which of you has had a dream?’

“I replied, ‘I have, O Messenger of Allah. I saw what appeared to be a balance lowered from heaven. You were weighed against Abū Bakr, and you outweighed him. Then Abū Bakr was weighed against Umar, and Abū Bakr outweighed him. Then Umar was weighed against Uthmān, and Umar outweighed him. Then the balance was raised.’

“The Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—said, ‘A prophetic caliphate; then Allah will grant kingship to whomever (2) He wills.’ (3)”

(1) (N) alone reads: “Abd al-Rahmān ibn Abī Bakr,” which is an error. (2) (N) and (M) read: *man* (“whomever”). (3) This hadith is recorded twice from Abū Bakra—may Allah be pleased with him—in *Sunan Abī Dāwūd*. The first is an authentic narration beginning: “Which of you has had a dream?” It is recorded in *Sunan Abī Dāwūd*, 4:289 (Book of the Sunnah, “A Chapter concerning the Caliphs”), and *Sunan al-Tirmidhī*, 3:368–369 (Book of Dreams, “Reports concerning the Prophet’s Dreams…”). Al-Tirmidhī said: “This is a *hasan sahīh* hadith.” The hadith is also recorded in al-Hākim’s *al-Mustadrak*, 3:70–71 (Book of Knowledge of the Companions), and 4:394 (Book of Dream Interpretation). Al-Hākim said: “This hadith has an authentic chain of transmission according to the criteria of the two Shaykhs, although they did not record it.” The second narration begins with the wording: “Which of you has seen a dream?” It includes the Prophet’s additional statement—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—“A prophetic caliphate; then Allah will grant kingship to whomever He wills.” It appears on the following page of *Sunan Abī Dāwūd*, 4:290. The editor states that its chain contains Alī ibn Zayd, namely Ibn Judān, whose hadith cannot be used as evidence. The hadith is also recorded in *al-Musnad* (al-Halabī ed.), 5:44, 50. See also *al-Musnad* (al-Halabī ed.), 4:63 and 5:376. Allah willing, this hadith will appear again in this volume (p. 513).
