Minhaj as-SunnahIbn Taimiya

He said:

“And there is the hadith of Sufyān, from Abd al-Malik ibn Umayr, from Ribī, from Hudhayfa ibn al-Yamān, who said: The Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—said:

‘Follow the two who come after me: Abū Bakr and Umar.’” (1)

He said (2):

“Al-Bukhārī transmitted with his chain from Abū Hurayra, who said: I heard the Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—say (3):

‘While I was asleep (4), I saw myself beside a well with a bucket suspended over it. I drew from it (5) as much as Allah willed. Then Ibn Abī Quhāfa took the bucket and drew one or two large bucketfuls from it. There was some weakness in his drawing—may Allah forgive him (6). Then it became an enormous bucket, and Umar ibn al-Khattāb took it. I have never seen a man of extraordinary strength accomplish a feat like his (7), until the people had watered their camels and brought them to rest.’ (8)”

He said:

“This is an explicit designation concerning the imamate.”

(1) This hadith is sometimes transmitted in this wording and at other times as: “I do not know how much longer I shall remain, so follow the two…” The hadith of Hudhayfa ibn al-Yamān—may Allah be pleased with him—is recorded in *Sunan al-Tirmidhī*, 5:271–272 (Book of Virtues, “A Chapter on This Subject”). Al-Tirmidhī said: “A report on this subject is also related from Ibn Masūd. This is a *hasan* hadith.” It is also recorded in *Sunan Ibn Mājah*, 1:37 (Introduction, “The Virtues of the Companions of the Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace”), and *al-Musnad* (al-Halabī ed.), 5:382, 399, 402. Al-Albānī declared the hadith authentic in *Sahīh al-Jāmi al-Saghīr*, 1:372. (2) “He said” is absent from (A) and (B). (3) (A) and (B) read: “He said.” (4) (N) and (M) read: “between sleep and wakefulness.” (5) (N) reads: *anhā* (“from it”). (6) (B) alone reads: “May Allah forgive him for his weakness.” (7) (A) and (B) read: “I have never seen any man of extraordinary strength draw as Umar drew.” (8) This hadith is related from Abū Hurayra and from Sālim ibn Abd Allāh, on the authority of his father, Abd Allāh ibn Umar—may Allah be pleased with them—in closely similar wordings at several places in al-Bukhārī: 5:6 (Book of the Merits of the Companions, “The Prophet’s Statement, ‘Were I to Take an Intimate Friend from among My Community…’”); 9:38–39 (Book of Dream Interpretation, “Drawing Water from a Well until the People Have Drunk Their Fill,” “Drawing One or Two Large Bucketfuls from a Well with Some Weakness,” and “Resting in a Dream”); and 9:139 (Book of Divine Unity, “Divine Will and Intention… and Allah Most High’s statement, ‘You grant sovereignty to whom You will…’”). It is also recorded in Muslim, 4:1860–1862 (Book of the Merits of the Companions, “Some of the Merits of Umar…”); *Sunan al-Tirmidhī*, 3:369 (Book of Dreams, “Reports concerning the Prophet’s Dreams…”); *al-Musnad* (al-Maārif ed.), nos. 4814, 4972, 5629, 5817, and 5859; 16:103 (no. 8222); and 17:9–10 (no. 8794); and *al-Musnad* (al-Halabī ed.), 2:450. The hadith will appear again in this volume (p. 511). A *qalīb* is a well. *Fath al-Bārī*, 7:38–39, states: “The words ‘I draw from it’ mean: ‘I fill the bucket.’ His words, ‘He drew one or two *dhanūbs*’—with a *fatha* on the dotted *dhāl*, followed by *nūn*, and ending in *bā*—refer to a large bucket when it contains water.… His words, ‘There was some weakness in his drawing,’ mean that he proceeded slowly and gently.… His words, ‘It became a *gharb* in his hand,’ mean that it became an enormous bucket. His words, ‘I have never seen an *abqarī*…’: this denotes anything that attains the utmost degree of excellence. It originally referred to a land inhabited by the jinn, which the Arabs made proverbial for everything extraordinary.… His words, ‘accomplish a feat like his,’ mean that he performed his task with surpassing effectiveness.… His words, ‘until the people settled at an *atan*’: an *atan* is the place where camels kneel after drinking and leaving the water.”
