Minhaj as-SunnahIbn Taimiya

Emigrants and Helpers, while those among them who go to extremes say that they are superior to the prophets, because they believe them to be divine, just as the Christians believe Christ to be divine.

The Christians say:

“Religion is entrusted to the religious scholars and monks: whatever they declare lawful is lawful, whatever they declare forbidden is forbidden, and whatever they prescribe constitutes religion.”

(1 The Rāfidah claim that religion is entrusted to the Imams: whatever they declare lawful is lawful, whatever they declare forbidden is forbidden, and whatever they prescribe constitutes religion 1)

(1).

As for those who have embraced Shiite extremism—such as the Ismāʿīliyyah, who affirm the divinity of al-Hākim and others like him among their imams—and who claim that Muhammad ibn Ismāʿīl abrogated (2) the revealed law of Muhammad ibn Abd Allāh, along with other doctrines of the extremist (3) Rāfidah, these people are worse than most of the unbelievers among the Jews, Christians, and polytheists. They affiliate themselves with the Shi'a and outwardly profess their doctrines (4).

[Objection: Extremism Is Found among Many Who Affiliate Themselves with the Sunnah, and the Response to It]

If it is said:

Much of the extremism, shirk, and religious innovation with which you have characterized the Rāfidah is also found among many who affiliate themselves with the sunnah. Many of them go to extremes regarding their spiritual masters, associate them as partners with Allah, and introduce acts of worship that have not been prescribed. Many of them visit the grave of someone they hold in high regard, either to ask him for what they need (5), to ask Allah through him for something they need (6), or because they believe that supplication at his grave is more likely to be answered than supplication in the mosques.

(1) The passage between (1–1) appears in (N), but is struck through. (2) (A) and (B) read: “shaykh”; this is an error. (3) (B) reads: “among the doctrines that belong to the extremists.” (4) (N) and (M) read: “their doctrine.” (5) (N) and (M) read: “a need.” (6) “A need” is omitted from (M), (A), and (B).
