Minhaj as-SunnahIbn Taimiya

At other times, they write their names on the soles of their feet [to the point that one governor began striking the feet of anyone who did so, saying, “I have only struck Abū Bakr and Umar, and I shall continue striking them until I have obliterated them.” Some of them name their dogs after Abū Bakr and Umar and curse them. Some, when naming a dog, will fight anyone who suggests to him (“Bukayr.”), saying, “You are naming my dog after the people of the Fire!” Others among them (1) revere Abū Lu'lu'a, the unbelieving Magian who was a slave of al-Mughīra ibn Shuba when he killed Umar. They cry, “Vengeance for Abū Lu'lu'a!” Thus, they revere (2) an unbelieving Magian—an unbeliever by the consensus of the Muslims—because he killed Umar, may Allah be pleased with him.

Among their follies is their displaying what they designate as a shrine. How often they have lied to people, claiming that a deceased member of the Prophet’s Household lies at a particular place—and sometimes even claiming that he was slain—and then building a shrine there, when it may in fact be the grave of an unbeliever or of some ordinary person. Many signs may make this apparent.

It is well known that punishing animals bearing such names (3)] and similar conduct can only (4) be the work of the most foolish and ignorant of people. It is self-evident that if we (5) wished to punish Pharaoh, Abū Lahab, Abū Jahl, and others whose status as some of the worst unbelievers is established by Muslim consensus, in such a manner, this would constitute the grossest ignorance, because (6)

(1) A reads: “and among them.” (2) “Thus they take [him] as an ally.” (3) The passage between brackets is absent from N. (4) A reads: “and the like of this—such conduct is only…”; N and M read: “Can such conduct be anything but…?” The adopted reading is from B. (5) The word “I” is absent from M. (6) N and M read: “for indeed.”
