(1) This report is narrated in substance from Ibn Abbās in Sahih al-Bukhārī, 6/16 (Book of Tafsīr, the surah beginning “Indeed, We Sent…”). See also Ibn Kathīr’s commentary on verse 23 of Surah Noah. (2) The phrase “in the Sahih” is absent from (A) and (B). (3) The hadith of Abū Marthad al-Ghanawī—may Allah be pleased with him—is found in Sahih Muslim, 2/668 (Book of Funerals, chapter on the prohibition of sitting on graves and praying toward them); Sunan Abī Dāwūd, 3/294 (Book of Funerals, chapter on the reprehensibility of sitting on graves); Sunan al-Tirmidhī, 2/257 (Book of Funerals, chapter on reports concerning the reprehensibility of treading on graves and sitting on them); Sunan al-Nasā’ī, 2/53 (Book of the Qiblah, chapter on the prohibition of praying toward graves); and al-Musnad (al-Halabī ed.), 4/135. (4) (N) and (M): “and in Sahih Muslim and elsewhere.” (5) “To me” is an addition in (A) and (B). (6) The hadith of Alī ibn Abī Tālib—may Allah be pleased with him—is found in Sahih Muslim, 2/666–667 (Book of Funerals, chapter on the command to level graves); Sunan Abī Dāwūd, 3/291 (Book of Funerals, chapter on leveling graves); Sunan al-Tirmidhī, 2/256 (Book of Funerals, chapter on reports concerning the leveling of graves); Sunan al-Nasā’ī, 4 (Book of Funerals, chapter on leveling graves when they have been raised); and al-Musnad (al-Maārif ed.), 2/105, 236–237.
