[the Exalted] (1), and this is the very purpose of the prophetic mission, for a messenger is one who conveys from Allah what He commands and forbids, and what He informs people of (2). The prophets are divinely protected from error when conveying the message (3), by the consensus of the Muslims, such that no error may remain uncorrected therein.
They disagreed over whether something might initially pass the Prophet’s lips that Allah the Exalted would then correct and clarify for him, without leaving him to persist in the error. Thus, it has been reported that the following was cast upon his tongue [may Allah bless him and grant him peace] (4): “Those are the exalted cranes, and their intercession (5) is surely to be hoped for.” Allah the Exalted then annulled what Satan had cast and confirmed His verses. Some held that this was not possible, while others held it possible, since it entails nothing objectionable. For Allah [the Exalted] (6) annuls what Satan casts, and Allah confirms His verses. Allah is All-Knowing, All-Wise:
“So that He may make what Satan casts a trial for those in whose hearts is a disease and those whose hearts are hardened. Indeed, the wrongdoers are in deep opposition.”
[Surah al-Hajj: 53] (7).
As for his statement, “Rather, (8) they may make mistakes (9)”
